CIF is one of the most widely used Incoterms in agricultural trade. Here's what it means in practice when you buy from Prime Field Agro Limited.
What CIF includes
CIF stands for Cost, Insurance & Freight. Under CIF, our quoted price covers three things: the cost of the goods themselves, marine insurance for the voyage, and the freight charges to carry the cargo to your named destination port. In other words, we arrange and pay for shipping and insurance up to the port you specify.
Where risk and responsibility sit
Under CIF, the seller arranges carriage and insurance, while risk transfers to the buyer once the goods are loaded onto the vessel at the port of origin. The insurance we take out protects the cargo during transit, giving you cover for the ocean leg of the journey.
What the buyer handles
- Import duties, taxes and customs clearance at the destination.
- Charges and transport from the destination port to your final warehouse.
- Any local handling fees beyond the port of discharge.
Why CIF is convenient for importers
CIF removes much of the complexity of arranging international freight. You receive a single, predictable price to your port, with insurance already in place — particularly valuable if you don't have established freight relationships out of East Africa. It lets you compare offers on a like-for-like landed basis.
A quick checklist before you order
- Confirm your destination port name precisely.
- Check your local import duties and documentation requirements.
- Agree the product grade and packaging specification in writing.
- Review the payment schedule: 30% deposit, 40% against B/L, 30% on delivery.
